Burma, as everyone knows by now, is governed by one of the most odious military dictatorships in the world. So it seems odd that the Ministry of Religion is so prominent there. One of their recent works is the construction an enormous reclining Buddha. It is impossible to photograph more than a tiny part of it. On the day I stopped by, a workman was dusting off the magic signs on the Buddha's feet with a feather-mop.

It's almost impossible not to wonder -- does it tickle?
