Atuu International is a New York State registered non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for scholarships for children in Ghana, West Africa to attend High School and College. Atuu means “to hug” in the Asante-Twi language. The group was formed in the fall of 2003 by a Binghamton University Student who returned from a summer of teaching in a rural village in Ghana. In the course of his teaching experience, he noticed that almost no students in his village ever made it past the junior high school level. He set out to change this. While in Ghana he organized the village teachers to form a scholarship board and singled out a few students who he promised scholarships to.

He also collaborated with a Ghanaian couple that had extensive experience with non-governmental organizations who eventually agreed to work as the in-country directors of Atuu International. This student also formed Binghamton Students for Students International (BSSI) in the fall of 2003 as a sister organization to Atuu. BSSI is a group of dedicated students at The State University of New York at Binghamton, who also work to raise money for scholarships for children in Ghana. Both groups are planning trips to Ghana in the coming years and put a strong emphasis on educating people in the U.S. about the “majority world.”
